Biography

Josh Clark is not an Olympic medalist, nor does he hold any world records. Yet, he is arguably responsible for creating more runners than anyone else in history. He is the creator of 'Couch to 5K' (C25K), a running plan designed for the absolute beginner, which has been downloaded and used by millions of people worldwide.

The story of C25K began in 1996. Clark was in his late 20s, recovering from a painful breakup, and felt out of shape and unmotivated. He decided to start running, but like many beginners, he found it punishing. 'I went out and ran for 20 minutes, and it hurt,' he recalls. 'I thought, there has to be a better way.' He realized that the traditional 'No Pain, No Gain' mentality was the biggest barrier for new runners. He adopted a new philosophy: 'No Pain, No Pain.' If it hurts, you're going too fast.

He began experimenting with intervals of walking and jogging, gradually increasing the running portion over time. He found that by keeping the intensity low and the progression slow, running could actually be enjoyable. When his mother, then in her 50s, expressed interest in running, he formalized his notes into a 9-week schedule to help her. It worked for her, and he decided to share it online on his website, 'Kick' (a site about sports for everyday people).

The program struck a chord. Its simplicity and gentleness were revolutionary in a fitness world obsessed with intensity. It didn't demand athleticism; it only asked for consistency. Over the years, the program spread virally through forums and word-of-mouth. Communities like the C25K subreddit grew to hundreds of thousands of members, all supporting each other through the same 9-week journey.

In a significant validation of his approach, the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK adopted Couch to 5K as a recommended exercise plan, creating a dedicated app that has been downloaded millions of times. Doctors prescribe it for physical and mental health. Clark's simple excel spreadsheet has evolved into a global movement.

Today, Josh Clark is a UX designer and strategist, founder of the agency Big Medium. He is a renowned expert in mobile design and the author of several books. However, he often says that C25K is his proudest creation because of the sheer number of lives it has changed. He proved that anyone, regardless of age or fitness level, can become a runner if they just start slowly enough.
